Let me tell you a story, this Ronnie Bonner man is one of my biggest influence in doing Devise. That was where he still owns UGP (Underground Products) brand. I dare to say that he was the one who made me know more about the street wear world when UGP had a socks collaboration project called ‘Royal Sunks’ with Mr Kim. Mr Ronnie then sold UGP and sadly not so long after that UGP died. I know some of you might know UGP since they had a few stores opened around Malaysia. It believes that a Malaysian businessman has bought UGP. I don’t know more about that so let’s just leave it there.
Mr Ronnie did well with UGP and now he did way way way better with The Shadow Conspiracy. More respect earned by Mr Ronnie from me when The Shadow Conspiracy was on the list in Steven Vogel‘s STREET WEAR book in 2006. How could a BMX parts brand managed to get recognized by the street wear world? Mr Ronnie did it. For me, he has brought BMX to another level. A level where BMX brands getting more serious with their soft goods rather than just to have a brand logo screen printed on a ready made t-shirt. In a lot of ways, what he does with The Shadow Conspiracy really inspires me.
ESPN has this Behind the Scenes(BTS) episodes of The Shadow Conspiracy. This a must watch. Watch all 3 episodes if you have time to kill. I can’t wait for the 4th episode.
P/s: My favorite phrase by Mr Ronnie, “Shadow is Shadow”…
