Bmx flatland Australia got a few word and some photos from Swedish flatland rider Anttoni Jämsä while he has been staying in Perth. After not riding for 8 years it was in Perth that he picked the bike up again and got things rolling. He is about to embark on the journey back to Melbourne via the Nullarbor after driving across to get to Perth.

Full name
Marko Anttoni Jonathan Jämsä

Please tell us a brief back ground on your riding history?
Started messing around with a BMX bike around 1998 I think. When my brother showed me how to barspin I got more interested into flatland and found a Japanese flatland page with how to’s. I was blown away. Started riding Flatland 1999, quit 2003, and started in September 2011 again.

What brought you to the Australian shores?
I guess since I saw Ayers Rock in a school book I got interested about Australia, Beautiful country!

Tell us a little about your home country of Sweden. How is life there? How is the scene?
I would say the life is very similar to here, but you can’t compare the weather, haha. We get like 3-4 months summer, and then it’s raining, snowing, or really windy, or everything at the same time.
Flatland scene is bad, I don’t think there’s any dedicated riders in the city I live in, Gothenburg. Used to be at least 1 more, but we never rode together. Hopefully I can inspire some people to ride flat!

Do you think it’s possible to compare Australia to Sweden?
Well, if you put it in standards of living, yes. Weather vise, no way man + we don’t eat vegemite and we drive on the right side of the road. haha.

Tell us a little about your motivations to travel.
For the past 5 years or so, I’ve been pretty busy with my car projects, + fulltime work. Flatland riding has been on my mind for couple of years, but had no time for it. I came to a point with the cars where I felt, OK, this I enough. I sold everything, and decided to finally do some traveling, don’t regret it.

What type of car did you have in Sweden?
Had many of them, last one was a Opel Ascona B with a heaps of mods. Had that as project car for 2 years, built 4-link rearaxle, engine & gearbox swap and so on. Was good fun torturing roundabouts and streets.

What has been your favorite Australian car you have seen or like?
Difficult, so many cool cars that are only here, I have a weak spot for the “city ute’s!!” look so dope..And of course all the old school cars that still are rust free here! In Sweden all cars rust away!..Narrogin rev heads was worth a visit.

What would be your favourite destination?
That’s a question I can’t answer, but it’s been Australia, and I still love it. Kuala Lumpur was awesome as well, got a tour around it by Llyas, Malaysian flatlander.

Where in Australia have you travelled so far?
I landed in Melbourne, spend couple of weeks there with a friend, Al, who helped me a lot. Bought a car, had it for 20hours and drove it to Perth..haha. So I’ve seen a lot of nothing which I kinda like..

Where will your travels take you next?
I’ll be heading back home at the end of January, or nearly home. I’ll go visit my brother in Finland. Then just get back to normal life in Sweden, go back to work as CNC machinist, but keep or riding !

Travelling anywhere in Australia takes a lot of time and I understand you’ve been driving lots of it. How do you pass the time in between places?
Yeah, it’s a vast country indeed!! I just try to stop at interesting places and spend some time there.. Other than that it’s been a lot driving indeed. But I like it.

What does riding mean to you? Any particular goals?
Have fun on the bike, and it’s freestyle! you can do whatever trick you like, however you like. Not really any goals, maybe try participate and arrange some flatland jams around Sweden.

How would you describe the riding scene in Australia?
Just been riding in Perth, but I like it here. Good people, and I love riding at concert hall.

What made you get back into flatland in Perth? How did you find out the flat scene in Perth?
I’ve been wanting to get back for years, but just haven’t had time or motivation. But after going to Malaysia and meet my friend Llyas, he finally told to go back riding!. Thanks Llyas!. He also gave me the link to the forums, and I just contacted some people there.

Were you stoked to be able to get a bike in Perth?
Yeah I was! Couldn’t wait to get back on bike, tried to find a complete one but they had all gone..Then found this mid school setup. But it’s ok for now!.

What is it going to be like heading back to Sweden now you have had a taste of the Australian Summer?
I think it’s gonna be horrible. Might have to come back! It sure has been wonderful here!

Any final words or thank you’s?
Thanks for family and friends back home. Thanks to all the flatland riders in Perth! Thanks to Llyas for Kualu Lumpur tour and finally getting me back riding. haha And Big thanks to Al Danger, And Haydn and David L. For being awesome Aussies! haha
