Flat Friday Issue 1 by Effraim

Welcome to Flat Friday, a news column I will be doing weekly to inform all what’s going on round the globe, during each week.

Contest News

Contest season kicked off last weekend, with King of the Circle in the Czech Republic, anyone who was at the Masters last year will know that the Czech scene is getting bigger and bigger, great future for those guys, Dominik Nekolny took the win, the rest of the results plus photos are all up on this site.
Across the pond, Terry Adams won the first US contest of the year at the Fight with Flight contest in Indianapolis , nice final battle edit vs Matt Wilhelm on Rad Dad’s website, www.bmxfreestyler.com, and also on this site that you’ve probably watched already. Also a great report on Alex Poirier’s and Prasheel’s blog,

-Griff from the infamous TGM crew is holding a contest the weekend 28/29th March in Peckham, South London, with a bit of a difference, it will be held in the Hannah Barry Art Gallery, Am and Pro groups and Rad vs Bmx bandits party, sponsors so far: Edwardes, Kunstform and Vans. Flatland will be the focus on the exhibition, novel concept from Griff, come down and support.

Big news just in is that Flatland is in the JomoPro contest this year, April 3-5th , at the Autumn park, one of the biggest contests of the year in the US, last year crazy hammers were thrown down in street.  Catfish on the mic, things could get a lil’crazy. This is a big boost for flat. Pat at FF has just posted a link on the global-flat forum, and also further details on fatbmx. www.fatbmx.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=6516

The 10th edition of Circle Cow starts tommorow, Martin is attending so expect a video up sometime the following week, no pressure Martin!! And also Sevisual Tom is in attendance so coverage of CC 10 should be good.

Blog news

What happened? One or two blogs last year, now there’s at least ten flatland related blogs being updated constantly. We will kick off with Matthias Dandois’s personal blog which has this week had some good updates: Fast sevisual edit from 2007,  photos from fashion show, news of Tom from Sevisual in town till Circle Cow, working on sequel to Hyperspeed Johnny  & Destruction Kid due out in the summer. http://matthiasdandois.blogspot.com.

-Scott O’Brien’s Ares blog has some great updates this week, a commercial from Hiro,  photos from the Fight the flight contest, a York Uno Ares edit plus Ares product updates, well worth a look. www.aresbykesamerica.com.

I can’t talk about blogs without plugging my own blog can I? Ton of updates this week, with all the snow we’ve had, much time spent indoors, Jason Forde bikecheck, hand scuffing with Roman Schiaverelli (remember that name from the Intrikat Mixt video?), Sam Foakes’ sig frame posted, http://flatmattersonline.blogspot.com

-Zion rider Akihiko Takahashi posted nice Chiba jam video on his myspace profile, with great footage of Aki and Time machine whiz kid Takahiro Ikeda. www.youtube.com/v/VuJL_cpW4dg

KHE’s Adam Kun is back riding after two month lay off due to a back injury, Adam hit ten backward whiplashes first session back, nice way to get back!!

Yours truly, has a Favourites list on www.fatbmx.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=6494

Chad Johnston has been a busy dude, aside from just editing one of the must have dvds of all time, he’s now hooked up with S&M, and has bonus section with couple of clips along with Sean McKinney on their new video “I wanna live”.

Last but not least, photos of Sam Foakes signature frame have just come through from Taiwan, just that out on separate post.

Sam Foakes Signature Frame

What to say when pictures say it all. Frame is so clean and simple and colors Sam chose are just beautiful. You see the big influence that Luna and LowKee frames had in making Focus.
Sam used all details that he loved about those 2 frames and combined them with the shape of frame that he had in mind. Now that prototypes are done, we finished the first part of this project and we´re starting with the second stage, Sam´s hardcore abuse of the frame.
We want to make sure that we got all the design details right and strong and durable as we wanted it. There is no other way to see that but to ride it. All of you know Sam got some mad skills and will really put it to a test.
We made these prototypes in 3 different tube thickness versions so there will be 3 different weights of it. Sam really uses the weight of the frame (bike) in his tricks so he will test different frame weights to see which one suits him best.
Here are some specs of this frame : TT length : 19.22"
CS length : 12.75"
HT angle : 74.5 degrees
ST angle : 70 degrees
 14mm laser cut droupouts
Spanish BB
Integrated headset

I told you that there were 3 weights to it:
- heaviest one is 2070 g ( 4.56 lbs )
- middle one is 1935 g (4.27 lbs)
- and we made the 3rd one in lightweight version just to see how it would turn out. This one is 1790 g ( 3.95 lbs ).

Other news are that Sam recently moved from his home town Cambridge to Manchester cause he got a great new job there and the best thing about this is that he found a great indoor place where he can ride. All of are familiar with English weather so you know what indoor place will mean to him, even though he is known for riding all his trick in heavy rain, hehe.

More from me next week...
