On June 1st once again a superb Flatland Jam was held in Costa Rica. This time it took place on an atmospheric square in Barva de Heredia, a city near the capital San José, surrounded by volcanoes and coffee plantations.
The event was organized on a small and unbureaucratic scale and was supposed to kick off at about 10 am. True, a little early for most people, but it was chosen like this in order to get the event done before the usual afternoon rain would come down.
However, it was not before 11 am that the event started for real. And waiting was worthwhile, as great riders from all parts of the country kept on arriving and signing up for the contest.
Despite the cruelly burning down midday sun, the riders were as motivated as it gets and put their best tricks up for sale. This was done in two separate categories: beginner´s category with 2 runs á 1:30 minutes and the expert´s category in a KO battle format.
The high level of flatlanding in Costa Rica left me astonished and I see a lot of potencial for future pro riders here. Beginner´s category was won by Luigi on his pink KGB bike.
In the expert finals Adrian Gómez “Chimby” got 2nd as he showed new stuff and had a consistent run. However, he could not stand up to Alonso Rodríguez of Guanacaste who took home the trophy for 1st place in this category. He convinced the judges with smooth, fresh tricks, time machine variations and not least with his commitment. Tainon convinced with his consistency – not sure if he touched the ground at all! – 3rd place for him.
A nice gesture at the end of this event was the decoration of Mike Meza, one of Costa Rica´s first BMX flatlanders, for his continuous commitment to pushing the sport.
Altogether this event was a big success and the time schedule was so acurate, that we finished just a few seconds before it poored down big time.
