Usually when I have to write something about BMX or a BMXer it just comes to me. For a couple of weeks I habe been meaning to write an introduction to this interview and for some reason it just didn´t happen this time. I have no clue why! Sascha is quite an interesting person and important part of the german flatland scene. Whenever Sascha is at a jam or contest, it always turns out to be fun. He´s a really good rider, too, and husband and father of one, and, and, and... Why don´t you just read the interview!
Introduce yourself really quickly: How old are you, how long have you been riding for, who are your sponsors?
My name is Sascha Heydeman, I am 31 years of age and I´ve been riding BMX for about 16 years. I have no sponsors.
You used to ride ramps and you´ve had two seperate bikes for a while, one for ramps, one for flatland. What´s the reason you are only riding flatland now? Are we going to see you riding street again in the future?
I just didn´t feel the same passion for ramps anymore and stuck to flatland.
I just think it´s more useful to focus on one thing at a time. If I still had a street bike I´m sure I would take it out every now and again.
You have won a cople of contests in Germany recently. Congratulations! Are you the best flatlander in Germany right now?
Thanks! I was very happy to win a contest. I felt elated after winning the pro class in Baiersbronn with probably the best run of my life. In no way am I the best flatlander in Germany at the moment, and that´s not my goal anyway. I just enjoy riding and doing new tricks.
A couple of years ago you, your wife and your daughter moved from your hometown of Hamburg Barmbek to Porta Westfalica, a comparably small town. Does that have any affect on your riding? Do you ride by yourself more now?
When I first moved to Porta Westfalica I used to ride with a local almost every day. After a year his passion died off and I had to ride by myself all the time. It´s definitely a big difference, since I never used to ride by myself in Hamburg.
By now I´m used to it and I enjoy every time that Martin Schulz is coming over for a session or when I ride with Maik Dettmer at his spot in Bünde.
What made you start "Flatland Fanatics" and waht are your goals behind it?
Well, my friend Collin from Hannover actually came up with the title. We were searching for a name for the first contest I wanted to hold in Minden and Collin took care of the flyer. Just out of nowhere he came up with "Flatland Fanatics." The name was born, and a few months after that I knew I wanted to use it for more than just that contest. I asked my friend Philipp Uricher from Konstanz if he was interested in starting Flatland Fanatics with me and he was up for it. We made a few t-shirts for promotion and started a little team. It´s a work in progress and we´re planning jackets, new t-shirt designs and a few bike parts to be released by the end of this year.
Please tell us a bit about the obstacles you came across in organizing your first contest in Minden, how was the acceptance among riders and did you fullfill your expectations?
Actually it turned out a lot less stressfull than I had imagined. First of all I asked the officials in townhall about a fitting location and it only took a few hours to find one. Finding sponsors was pretty easy, too: every company I asked was happy to support the event. My expectations were easyly ecceeded, because I just wanted to hold a small event. When people started signing up from Japan, Singapore among other countries, it took a new turn. I was more than happy with the event!
Competely different toppic: I know you like Bushido, a German rap artist, who is polarizing. What is so fascinating about him. Do you think that has anything to do with your hometown?
Of course you had to ask about Bushhido!
What do I think is fascinating about him?
Well, I like the lyrics, they are very deep and real, and then there was his his rise to the top. I don´t think it has much to do with where I come from, even though I have to say Barmbek is probably Hamburgs quarter with the highest crime rate and I grew up around some folks that most people wouldn´t want to hang out with.
Throughout the years that I´ve known you it seem you have paid a lot of attention to detail, sometimes giving your bike the same colour as your car. Fill us in on that: what´s you occupaion and how did you end up in that?
I work as an auto painter. A mate of mine from school was already an apprentice in that field, I did an internship and loved the job right away.
In general, what are your feelings towards cars and tuning? Do you have a dream car?
My attitude towards tuning hase changed quite a bit. People used to put the biggest spoilers on their cars and lower them to the point where you could hardly drive them. These days I like minimalistic tuning, nice colour, nice wheels, that´s it. My dream car? If I could ever afford it, I´d have to say Mercedes CL 63 AMG for sure.
Back to flatland: What are your goals short term and long term? Any tricks you want to learn? How do you usually aproach new tricks anyway? Do you think about your links and try to find tricks that would fit in or do you just have a few dream tricks and when you learn them you try to link them with your other tricks?
I want to ride for as long as possible and have fun doing it. That´s what´s most important to me! There aren´t really any specific trickts I want to learn. The ideas for tricks usually come to me when I´m on my bike and then I try to put those new tricks into my links. I do however plan to learn a few x-footed tricks in the near future.
Do you hav any favorite riders? Who would that be?
Martti Kuoppa for sure, because he is "The Leader Of The New School! Dominik Nekolny, Adam Kun and Kaisuke Tanigawa. I like their style and their links.
Which contest would you like to travel to?
I would love to go to the Voodoo Jam in New Orleans one day. Judging by the videos I´ve seen of the event it looks amazing.
I know you are planing to build a house with your family. Do you think that will have a negative impact on your riding at all?
While we´re actually building it will cut into my riding time for sure. But I have a riding spot in the backyard lined up already, so I´m sure I will be fine.
Anything you would like to add to finish this off? It´s now or never!
I would just like to thank a few people: First of all my wife, who is always there for me and Next I want to thank Martin (global-flat) for the great trips and fun times, Mike S. for putting up with me all that time and supporting my riding. Phillip U., Sebastian S.; Marco H.(aka der Hausmeister), Jirka Z. and those guys from Hamburg, who stayed loyal even after I moved away.
Thanks!
In letzter Zeit hast Du einige Contests gewonnen. Herzlichen Glückwunsch dazu! Bist Du gerade der beste Flatlander in Deutschland?
Danke !
Was fasziniert Dich an dem?
Was fasziniert mich an Bushido ?
Hast Du Lieblingsfahrer?
Danke
