June 09: Ronny Engelmann from Germany

My name is Ronny Engelmann, i live in Kassel, Germany but was born in East-Germany near Cottbus.

imageWhen did you start riding?

This winter my 5th year will start. I started riding breakless one year ago.

How often do you ride?

Because of my work (every day from 10 am to 7 pm) I try to ride after work for 1 or 2 hours on summer and one hour in winter.

Do you ride contests?  If yes, what has been your biggest success?

I rode at the BMX Masters 2 years ago - 19th or 17th place in Expert class and at the last BMX Masters 4th in qualification and 10th in final (had a knee injury while riding after qualification).
But nothing else with contests...but I really like to go to jams because the feeling is so nice - all the riders are more relaxed :)

Where do you ride?

I ride at a place called "Scheidemannplatz" in the middle of Kassel.

The spot isn´t far away from my work so I mostly ride there but there are so many people sometimes you can´t ride without hitting someone´s face ;-) But there´s a second place here 40 minutes away from the city, a hockey court. There´s nature around, tree´s, and no streets or people. I really like to be near of nature when im riding

imageCan you tell us a bit about the riding scene in your town?

Ohhhhh yes!!! Two words...NO SCENE. Sad. There are 5 riders who rides flat here but nobody rides often. Most riders ride one time in 2 weeks. I talked to these riders but nobody want to ride more or have the motivation to come and ride together with the others and me.

Imagine you could make a flatland world tour, which 5 places would you like to visit for riding and why?

First Japan - I love these japanese style hehe and the "be together-effect" is much better than here.
Second is America because of the Voodoo Jam and the whole american global flat users. I wish i could ride with all the users here hehe.
Other places are Thailand, Australia (sun, Simon Obrien - smoothest brake style for me in world), Paris - want to ride with the french guys for a week and take the motivation to Kassel.

Is there a goal you would like to reach concerning your riding?

Only riding as long as i can be happy with it and having a shoe-sponsor because good shoes are so expensive and wear out fast. Maybe I will try in the future to compete in proclass at an international contest and dont be the last :) So i can tell it my kids in future :D

Which trick/combo do you work on at the moment?

Some Boomerang variations and to have some steady combos. For now i have only one combo which is everytime the same. All the other combos are freestyle but i like it because i never rode or ride only for competition. Its all about good feelings and fun!

imageWhat kind of music do you like? Tell us your 3 favourite songs.

Oouuuh thats not easy! I love to hear dubstep, drum n´bass, electro and of course some classic music, sometimes i ride to Manu Chao or Bonobo to relax and enjoy the sun. Check this out:

Don´t like:

-people who talk about themes but don´t know anything about it.
-contests and jams which are so far away
-the though to take my brakes on or let it off

What is your job/what do you study?

I just passed my exam for the apprenticeship ...now i sell BMX bikes and other bikes in a bikeshop.

What are your hobbies besides flatland and do they influence your way of riding?

Besides flatland i do parcour, ride street and safi. But besides that the most important hobby is relaxing and listening to good music.
